DMEK Best Practices – Real life (t)issues
NIIOS | AER is organizing a series of online DMEK Best Practices sessions starting fall 2024. These sessions are not only for corneal surgeons but also for OR assistants, eye bank staff, optometrists, and other professionals involved in the field. Whether you’re in the OR, working in the consultation room, managing logistics, or preparing donor tissue, every role is crucial to the success of the transplantation. The synergy among these roles ensures that patients receive the best possible (and timely) care.
What can you expect? We will share practical knowledge, tips, and tricks to elevate the DMEK technique to the highest possible level. These sessions are freely accessible and will be tailored to current developments and experiences in the field. We collaborate with colleagues who share their experiences and insights, allowing you to benefit directly from what works in practice. Relevant insights from each session, depending on the session, will be shared on our website in the form of visual and/or audio material.
The next DMEK Best Practices session is scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 19:00 (CEST/Amsterdam time), with the theme:
“DMEK & Cataract?”
The second session in our DMEK Best Practices series addresses a current and important topic: the interaction between DMEK and cataract surgery. Whether you are considering combining these surgeries or performing them separately, this session offers valuable insights and practical knowledge from various perspectives. Each surgery impacts the other, and understanding this dynamic is crucial for optimal outcomes. What does cataract surgery mean for donor tissue in DMEK? How does a combined approach affect clinical outcomes and the patient experience? Discover this and more in our interactive session.
What to Expect?
This session will feature a mix of hands-on presentations, clinical insights, and time for discussion. Three experienced speakers will share their expertise:
• Dr. Robert Jan Wijdh
Mr. Wijdh will present on the combination of phacoemulsification (cataract surgery) and DMEK. He will discuss the pros and cons of combined versus successive surgeries.
• Dr. Remco Stoutenbeek
Mr. Stoutenbeek will delve into the use of Pentacam corneal topography as a supplement to biometric measurements when calculating intraocular lens power. An essential addition for those seeking precision in lens calculations.
• Anita Sajet
Ms. Sajet will discuss the pre-processing of DMEK grafts with donor corneal tissue that contains post-phaco scars. A challenging but increasingly common situation.
A maximum of 30 participants per session
